How to Decorate When You Are On A Budget!

4 Decorating Budget Tips to Get You Started on your decor project when money is tight but you still want to have great style in your space.

How to Decorate When You Are On A Budget

As an interior designer, I am often asked, "What are the rules for this or for that?" The first thing I tell them to remember when they are decorating is that there are no rules except those that you set for yourself. Having a plan and starting budget will help you to keep on track with your decorating project.

Here are 4 decorating budget tips that will help you get started on your project.

1. Believe In Yourself!

Trust your instincts. You know what you like as well as what you don't like. You will actually know more about what looks good for your home than you think. Be confident in your decisions.

If you are stumped about what colors to use, I suggest you look no further than your bedroom closet. I have found with my clients, that they often have a favorite color or two and those can be the starting off point for them.

Once, I conducted a color personality quiz with a small group in a paint store and after discovering their color palette, often they would tell me that they didn't like their colors. I would then tell them to look down at what they were wearing that day, every single time, they would have on one or two of the colors in their palette that was recommended from the color quiz, so, it is true, you just need to believe in yourself!

If you want to take that color personality quiz for yourself, it is located on the Sherwin Williams website: https://www.swcolorid.com/, there, you will answer 10 multiple choice questions, (don't overthink them) that will reveal the right color palette for you. You don't have to love all the colors, but it gives you an idea of colors you can use for decorating your home, and, ... Best of all, ... It's Free! Great for decorating when money is tight.

2. Choose what will be your Focal Point!

Next, I want you to look around your room, select the element that you want to highlight, it could be a fireplace or perhaps a window with a great view, then make this the focal point, the area that you want to draw attention to.

Now you will want to highlight this feature. Some ways in which to do this is by the way you place your furnishings. This can help to draw a person’s eye towards your focal point. Just moving some furniture around can create an entirely new look, and best of all, It's Free, you don't have to spend one cent, you just need to get creative and move some things around.

If you happen to have a great view out of your window, then highlight this as your focal point. Arrange your seating so that it directs your eye to the view. It will be so much more pleasant and relaxing looking at beautiful scenery rather than a television or computer screen.

3. Concept or Theme?

You can have one theme for the entire home or select different themes or concepts for individual rooms. Again, there are no rules, it's up to your personal preference.

A particular color can be a theme. You can choose any concept or theme for your space, it could be a certain style, such as Transitional, Mid-Century Modern, or even Eclectic, which is a mix of different styles. I suggest going to pinterest.com and starting a budget decor board. Then search for budget-friendly ideas, when you find one that you love, pin it to that board. Even if it's just a color, style, or accessory, pin it. This will be immensely helpful in later helping you select your theme and concept for your own personal decor project. Doing this will give you a starting point, and will help to guide you through the decorating stages. And best of all, getting fabulous ideas from pinterest.com is free, making it very budget-friendly.

Once you have pinned a variety of rooms & ideas to your budget-friendly board, study your favorite ones and copy the ideas of what professional designers have created, in your own space. Interior design is something that you can easily mimic. It is perfectly okay to use these design ideas in your room. Again, obtaining this information is a free & budget-friendly resource for your very own space.

4. Action Plan!

Now it's time to take all your ideas and get into action! If you are going to be repainting, I suggest that you do this first. Once that is complete, continue working with the furnishing's placement, art on the wall, window coverings & then top off with the room jewelry also known as the accessories.
